Artist Charlie Hawksfield led “The Folly Building Workshop” encouraging participants to view buildings as non-functional expressions of ideas. Beginning with a reading from Shirley Ardener’s “The Partition of Space”, the session examined how structures shape social meaning and perception. Participants then focused on the gatehouse as a folly, designing speculative model structures that responded to themes of territory, symbolism and control. Through collective making and discussion, participants had the opportunity to reflect on what these structures mean to them and how these forms can be expanded.
